Cardiac arrest, heart attack, and stroke are one of the most deadly things that can occur in the human body. Knowing the difference in them might save your life – or someone else’s.

CARDIAC ARREST

HEART ATTACK

STROKE

What are they?

Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart stops beating properly and is unable to pump blood, due to an electrical problem in the heart.

A heart attack occurs when blood flow is impeded from reaching the heart, severely damaging the heart muscle.

A stroke is a “brain attack”. It can happen to anyone at any time. It occurs when blood flow is impeded from reaching the brain.

How the disease happens?

Cardiac arrest happens because of the organ’s malfunctioning, so the heart muscles all of a sudden stop beating.

A heart attack or myocardial infarction (MI) can happen when a blood vessel (Coronary artery) that carries oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle:

  • bursts or
  • is blocked by a clot

A stroke can happen when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain:

  • bursts or
  • is blocked by a clot

   What causes the disease?

Cardiac arrest is caused by the heart’s electrical system that has gone out of control, causing irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) and even complete stopping of the heart.  A heart attack is caused by a blockage in blood flow to the heart.  A stroke is caused by a blockage in blood flow to the brain.

   What causes the blockage?

Cardiac arrest does not require artery blockage to occur.  This blockage can be caused by cholesterol and plaque buildup, or a blood clot.
