Not only is the disease common in children, but adults can also develop ear infections. Otitis media is an inflammation of the entire atrial system and the mastoid bone (behind the eardrum), and often produces fluid in the atrium. This fluid may be infectious or sterile.

Complications of otitis media

If otitis media is not treated promptly, it can lead to acute mastoiditis. Once the disease recurs severely, very dangerous complications such as perforation of the eardrum, fibrosis of the eardrum or hearing loss, facial nerve paralysis, mastoiditis are more likely to occur. in the brain such as meningitis, epidural abscess, brain abscess, ... easily fatal.

Causes of otitis media

The cause of the disease is an infection of the nose and throat caused by bacteria or virus. In addition, due to atrial fibrillation, common due to warts, sinus purulent rhinitis, tumors in the palate. There are cases of infections due to respiratory infections, reflux disease, allergies or air pollution, cold weather are also the causes of otitis media nowadays.

Common signs of otitis media

A common sign of otitis media usually starts with an earache, then has a watery discharge and reduced hearing capacity.

There are also other less common signs such as tinnitus, dizziness (often detected in older children). There are cases of fever, swelling behind the ears, anorexia and difficulty sleeping ...

To detect the disease, adults and children need the assistance of a doctor in the diagnosis, such as using an otoscope or otoscope (Oto-Endoscope).

Middle ear infections are not only seen in children, but adults also have a high incidence.

Treatment of otitis media

There are many ways to treat otitis media, among which medical treatments are essential. Accordingly, oral antibiotics are the medicine of choice. Antibiotic selection is based on the knowledge of common bacteria in otitis media. It is best based on the results of the ear implant antibiotic.

The minimum duration of treatment is eight days. If the perforation of the eardrum can be used with ear drops, do not pump. If the perforation of the eardrum may be small in the first 3-4 days (non-toxic ear type) to prevent the formation of pus that drains the drainage, then rinse with physiological saline or hydrogen peroxide . In addition, it is also possible to open a hose, pump atrial cannula.

A number of cases of otitis media but ineffective antibiotic treatment require an eardrum incision - Diabolo catheterization, or tonsillitis. Tonsillitis is performed if the otitis media is accompanied by signs of upper airway inflammation due to obstruction of enlarged tonsillitis. If the patient has symptoms of the threat of complications and optimal medical treatment does not bring satisfactory results, then surgery may be required for atrial surgery and mastoid mastectomy.
