According to Dr. Do Duc Tin - Department of Executive Health Screening, influenza is a respiratory disease caused by many types of influenza virus and is highly contagious. Every year, the flu virus changes and causes many diseases. Therefore, getting vaccinated against the flu every year is the best way to prevent seasonal flu.

Each person's antibody produced by the flu vaccine only lasts about 1 year. In Vietnam, research results on influenza show that flu outbreaks occur year round, peaking in March, April, September and October each year. Therefore, it is best to get a flu shot before the flu season.

Currently, at City International Hospital, there are 2 types of influenza vaccines used in Vietnam: Vaxigrip (France), Influvac (United States) for children and adults.

For Vaxigrip and Influvac vaccines, the specific injection schedule is as follows:

  • Children from 6 months to 9 years of age who have never had a flu shot: Get 2 doses at least 1 month apart, then get 1 shot every year.
  • Children over 9 years old and adults: 1 injection of 0.5ml, then booster injections every year.

Getting an annual flu vaccine for your child helps protect him/her from flu outbreaks.

Dr. Tin added that adults and children need to get the seasonal flu vaccine before the flu season of that year and should get it as soon as possible when the year's vaccine is available.

In Vietnam, according to influenza epidemiological research, influenza epidemic usually appears year-round, peaking in March, April, September and October each year. The vaccine should be given about 2 weeks to 1 month before the flu season.

For women planning to become pregnant, it is best to get the flu vaccine before getting pregnant. If you are in the seasonal flu but didn't get the shot before you became pregnant, you can still get the inactivated flu vaccine in the third trimester. Pregnant women are at high risk of complications from influenza and the influenza vaccine is inactivated so it can be given during pregnancy.

For children who are susceptible to influenza viruses, the flu vaccine should be given to children aged 6 months.

Currently, the disease situation of the corona virus disease (Covid-19) is still complicated, so doctors recommend that in addition to washing hands, wearing masks, paying attention to nutrition, training, it is necessary to get vaccinated against influenza vaccine. Disease prevention to increase resistance against diseases.
