Flu is a disease that can spread rapidly and is caused by different types of virus strains that can change every year. This is why you or your child may need to be vaccinated every year. But the vaccine takes some time to kick in, which is why it's always recommended to get vaccinated early, which gives your body the roughly two-week period it needs to develop an immune response to the vaccine prior to the start of peak flu season. If you miss this deadline, however, the vaccine can still offer some benefit. So it's important to get it as long as people are still getting sick.

Flu shots also tend to be more effective for children — and since kids, along with the elderly, are susceptible to complications of the disease, it’s especially important that they get vaccinated.
