May 11, a 9-year-old boy was given an endoscopy surgery of the inner ear to pull out a 5mm x 8mm beetle performed by Dr. Le Quoc Tu (International City Hospital) to prevent the risk of injuring his ear canal and breaking his eardrum.

Around 9 pm the same day, O.M.H, a 9 year old boy was sleeping, when The creature had crawled into his ear. Upon waking, and feeling something definitely wasn't right, he started experiencing a severe pain, the feeling of strange objects moving in the ears accompanied by headache and bleeding ears. The family went to the local hospital and was diagnosed with a foreign object in the right ear. Here, the baby was treated with salt water but so far no improvement. The boy’s eardrum was so inflamed and it was unclear which made his father (Mr. O.P.H.H) really worried. He finally decided to transfer him to City International Hospital hopping for a better curable treatment.

O.M.H started experiencing a severe pain, the feeling of strange objects moving in the right ears.

Admitted to the CIH Department of Otolaryngology - O.M.H was found Blood and other fluid trickled from his right ear. Otolaryngologists at CIH (an experts in all things ear, nose, and throat) recommended MRI scanner. These specialists see plenty of foreign bodies in ear canals, but according to Dr. Le Quoc Tu, these are mostly beads in little kids’ ears. He peered into the boy’s ear with an operating microscope, saying “It’s a bug. It’s big.” size 5mmx8mm close to the tympanic ear. The doctor started by using saline nasal spray into the boy’s ear then  with his special tools the otolaryngologist pulled from the boy’s ear a slightly larger than a Japanese beetle-same shape, but dull brown, no metallic body. After the endoscopy, The skin in the ear canal got ripped, there is edema caused by insect bites but fortunately the eardrum was fine. After the procedure, baby got relieved from pain and headache, although still slightly dizzy but no more after 10 minutes.

Endoscopic treatment for foreign object removal

Dr Le Quoc Tu, ENT Specialist at CIH said: "The case was difficult due to the large size of the insect, their legs piercing the skin of the ear canal. The brine pumping is almost ineffective in using special tools for insect removal. Insects can cause damage to the ear canal, perforation of the eardrum, and damage to the anatomical structures inside the middle ear. Therefore, treatment sho be immediate without any delays. Thanks to the boy’s family for their quick reaction taking him to CIH."

Hot weather climate with intensive rain showers is such a great condition for insects to crawl off the ground and into human habitats. Dr. Le Quoc Tu also advised parents to sleep with mosquitoes mesh even during the day to avoid insects. Check the blankets, pillows, bedtime mattresses to ensure the safety of your babies. When detecting insect infestation into the ear, nose and throat area, rush yourself to the nearest doctors or medical facility for a prompt diagnosis and treatment, and avoid unfortunate circumstances.
