Education Newspaper - Currently, many foreigners have come to Vietnamese medical facilities for medical examination and treatment. However, in order to enhance the development of medical tourism, medical units and providers must ensure professionalism and diversified quality services. That information was provided by the participants at the consultation session of the project "Attracting international patients, Vietnamese living abroad and Vietnamese with high income of high quality medical care in Vietnam for the period of 2020-2030" organized by the Ministry of Health in Ho Chi Minh City recently.

There are 500 international patients being treated each day in Vietnam

The representative of the Medical Services Management Department (Ministry of Health) said that in the first 6 months of 2019, there were nearly 89,000 foreigners coming to the medical center (nearly 500 people / day), more than 10,100 foreigners came to inpatient treatment at hospitals. around the country. The techniques chosen by foreigners are: cardiology, dentistry, surgery, cancer and aesthetics. In Ho Chi Minh City, many hospitals have also attracted a large proportion of foreigners to medical services. In particular, Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy performed examinations for 8,282 patients, 927 inpatient patients; Cho Ray Hospital examines 1,793 patients, 292 inpatient patients ... The patients are mainly from Cambodia, Laos, China, USA, Philippines, Australia ... Most patients appreciate the quality of service , BS qualifications at Vietnamese hospitals.

The above rate affirms that the efficiency of domestic health services has met the medical care needs of people at home and abroad. Vietnam's medical qualifications have gained a lot of achievements, even far beyond those of regional countries. However, in addition to the high proportion of foreigners trusting and using medical services in Vietnam, many domestic patients still do not believe in medical services at domestic health facilities. Each year there are still about 40,000 Vietnamese going abroad for medical treatment at a cost of about US $ 2 billion. This is a huge waste of domestic resources. In addition, many foreign patients also refuse to continue treatment in postoperative hospitals, which is a waste of domestic medical resources. The reason is that hospitals and health facilities in Vietnam have not had a payment mechanism for international health insurance holders; infrastructure of some hospitals is still weak, overcrowding and medical services are not yet comprehensive. Public hospitals in Vietnam still lack medical services, while foreign patients such as English, French, American, Japanese ... require very high medical services, such as rooms. private illness, interpreters and 24/24 hour waiters with international quality service ...

Doctor ability to speak English

Assoc.Prof. Dr. Tang Chi Thuong - Vice Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health - said that currently the infrastructure and service quality of hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City have basically met the medical tourism products such as dental tourism, cosmetic tourism, traditional medicine, general examination and disease screening and specialized services, specialized medical centers to meet the increasing demands of patients. However, in order to develop health tourism, the units participating in this type must operate legally and be assessed for quality; Besides, it is necessary to meet the professionalism in providing services and qualifications. Accordingly, it is necessary to have medical facilities for medical tourists; a team of medical, BS and highly specialized experts who can communicate in English. In addition, the units need to collect prices consistent with the quality of service provided; Flexible payment methods. Especially need the close coordination between travel agencies, travel agencies and hospitals, medical facilities ...

Here, Assoc.Prof. Dr. Luong Ngoc Khue - Director of the Medical Services Administration Department - said that with facilities, professional qualifications, quality of medical examination and treatment not inferior to other countries in the region; besides the low cost, domestic hospitals have attracted more and more patients, including overseas Vietnamese, foreigners to come to the clinic. This is the impetus for the health sector to continue improving the quality of medical services to attract foreign and overseas Vietnamese patients, and at the same time to retain Vietnamese domestic treatment instead of going abroad.

Mr. Khue emphasized: “Vietnam has many good doctors with high professional skills to meet the requirements of treating complex diseases. However, in order to retain patients, attract more and more patients at home and abroad, hospitals need to invest more from facilities, equipment and human resources. Besides, it is necessary to strengthen communication for people about the treatment capacity of BV, the high technology that BV has done ... ".
