"Asians’ blood vessel wall are smaller and thinner than Europeans, so the risk of stroke in Asians is higher. In Vietnam, each year about 200,000 people get stroke every year, about 50 percent of them die, "said Dr.Mahen Nadarajah, Singapore. Interventional cardiologist at CIH shared in “Headache and the risk of stroke” seminar, June 11, 2018.

Accordingly, the seminar attracted more than 100 public clients, mainly the elderlies with vascular abnormality symptoms and Neurological Problem Symptoms, as well as a group of young adults who want a clearer and better understanding about the risk of stroke in order to assist their family members in Preventing Heart Disease And Stroke.

A large number of clients attended the conference on headaches and stroke risk.

At the conference, Dr. Mahen analyzed the exact concept of stroke and the current stroke situation of Vietnamese people. "Stroke is a phenomenon in which the blood flow to the brain is suddenly interrupted by two major reasons: cerebral infarction and cerebral hemorrhage. In Vietnam, about 200,000 people suffer a stroke every year and 50% of them die each year." Dr. Mahen also mentions the rejuvenation of stroke patients. The main reason is the introduction of fast food from the West contains greasy oils and bad cholesterol, the rate of stroke in young people has increased.

Dr Mahen Nadarajah explained symptoms of headache and stroke..

Stroke treatment at City International Hospital:
Medical treatment:
Tissue Plasminogen Activator (TPA), which reduces the rate of disability and increases the patient's ability to restore movement. However, it should be used within 3 hours from the onset of stroke, immediately afterwards promptly bringing the patient to a hospital or clinic capable of treatment for treatment.
Surgical treatment: endovascular intervention using a thrombus with a mechanical device.
MERCI Concentration System (Cerebral ischemic Remission): The MERCI Retriever is a cork-like medical device designed to treat Ischemic Strokes. The device is mounted on the top of the catheter to protect it from artery walls. Once it has passed through the blood clot, the device is pulled open and covered with blood clots. At this point the doctor will proceed to remove the blood from the artery.
Penumbra System®: The device is designed to re-circulate the flow of large clogged blood vessels in the cerebral circulation, using a blood clotting catheter to block the vein while using a separator to break the clot. Continuous aspiration is performed by pulling the slide separator inside the catheter at the tip near the thrombus in the condition that the flow is stopped by pumping in the catheter. Stop flow is usually less than 1 minute.
Solitare (Solitaire Revascularization Device): Helps to re-establish blood flow and thrombus clots the patient's blood vessels. The device is a self expanding stent made of tiny curved wires, used as a net to catch and remove blood clots from the blood vessels. The doctor inserts the device into the blocked artery by a thin catheter tube. When entering the artery, the device expands, presses and clamps. At this point the blood flow to the brain is restored, and the doctor will pull the clot out of the catheter.

MERCI concentric recovery and mechanical blood elimination in ischemia.

In addition, Dr. Mahen discusses about DSA (Digital Subtraction Angiography) System operating at City International Hospital, one of the most advanced systems for screening and treatment of problems related to blood vessels, nerves and many other diseases. Doctors say the application of this modern technology to the treatment process will certainly bring about more than 60% of treatment effectiveness.
At the end of Dr. Mahen's presentation, a series of questions from attendees to Dr. Mahen Nadarajah. Some middle-aged clients who frequently suffer from headaches, stiffness, and sleeplessness, and anxiety is one of the hallmarks of stroke risk. Dr Mahen analyzed: "With only two symptoms of headache and insomnia, it is not possible to conclude that patients are at risk for stroke. However, these phenomena should not be discounted. For those with frequent headaches and insomnia for a long time, a health checkup and screening should be carried out to avoid unawareness. "

One father with his son in seminar, who used to be a former patient of Dr. Mahen, said after medical treatment, his health had recovered quite well. However, a few days ago, his legs got weak and shaking right after waking up, wondering if  he got stroke again. Dr Mahen said: "The fact that he is still alive to this point means that his medical treatment has been effective. Dizziness as well as loss of strength in the limbs may be symptoms of old age. However, if this situation continues  to happen repeatedly, he should conduct re-examination to be diagnosed with accurate treatment.
Another male patient with a previously diagnosed "anxiety disorder" symptom had a problem with his frequent anxiety, headache and insomnia. He had been given medical treatment, but just without medicine, headaches and insomnia continued to affect his life. This guest is very worried about the risk of high stroke. Dr. Mahen explained: "In his case, repeated medication is not the right thing to do. It’s necessary  to find out why he is worried, resulting in insomnia, because frequent sleeplessness will cause headaches. He needs to be examined and diagnosed psychologically and psychologically as well as related factors to determine the cause of the disease and to have appropriate treatment. "
The program ended with the presentation of 20 vouchers for stroke screening for 20 customers coming early at the seminar. The value of each voucher is 1 million VND.

The first customers coming to the seminar were given a stroke screening voucher.

To protect the health and avoid risk of stroke, Dr. Mahen recommends that clients seek periodic health screening and screening to timely prevent dangerous diseases and to take the best preventive measures.
