City International Hospital has successfully performed laparoscopic surgery for patient O. Chhun (66 years of age, Cambodian). Prior to this treatment, Oeur.Ch came to CIH for his routine health checkup, which turned out to be his life-saving visit when the lung tumor is found based on the test result.

September 07, 2018, Patient Oeur.Ch walked to City International Hospital for his health check after having associated with frequent chest pain, fatigue and shortness of breath. As the capabilities of CT scan result have advanced, higher levels of spatial resolution reveal tinier lung abnormalities and lung nodules were reported. Two weeks into initial prescribed treatment, in his follow-up visit, the patient's respiratory function got improved and stabilized. September 20, 2018 CIH thoracic surgeons offered a less invasive surgical approach called a video-assisted lobectomy for patient O. Chhun as a sole treatment of early-stage lung cancer (benign lung tumor).  Directly in charge of this surgery, Dr. Huynh Minh Dang shared, “Over the years, state-of-the-art VATS lobectomy technique has been applied by many various leading thoracic surgeons from across the globe as well as surgeons at City International Hospital as we pride ourselves to be one of the few practices in the nation with significant experience in video-assisted lobectomy. After tumor surgery, more tests will be done to determine whether a tumor is benign or cancerous”.

Patient visit and big congrats from City International Hospital’s Board of Directors

This Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) technique used in biopsy or wedge resection to lobectomy and possesses clear advantages such as help in dissection, less perioperative complications and shorter operative time and hospital stay. The incision was made on the side of the chest between the ribs without significant bleeding. VATS lobectomy has showed better safety and efficacy in terms of intraoperative and early postoperative outcomes as compared with the traditional thoracotomy approach.  Patient’s hospital stay to about three to four days and the patient experiences a more rapid recovery with less pain and smaller wound from the incision after VATS lobectomy surgery while the traditional open-chest approach (called a thoracotomy) typically requires five to seven days of recovery in the hospital, with an extended recovery at home.

Dr. Dao Thi My Van - Head of Intensive Care Department at City International Hospital interpreted the case history: "For patients with benign lung tumors, or non-cancerous lung tumors without complex pathology, complete surgical removal of a tumor is usually a cure. However, patient Oeur.Ch with history of obesity, high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation and diabetes that’s why during the operation, the anesthesiologist team must perform a systematic review to identify high-risk medical conditions and assess such as risk of bleeding and venous thromboembolism in order to have plan on an appropriate use of anticoagulation to reduce perioperative blood loss also in major bleeding surgery, as well as the risk of stroke due to cerebral infarction or perioperative myocardial infarction. “

Dr. Dao Thi My Van - Head of Anesthesia & ICU Department, International City Hospital

It’s also highly recommended by doctors at CIH, the symptoms of lung tumors can be tricky for many people to identify, because symptoms are often mistaken with a cough or fever. Early-stage cancers haven't spread much, if at all, whereas later-stage cancers have spread to more areas of the body. Prevention Screening Tests can find diseases early, when they're easier to treat, especially for cancer prevention, leading to better outcomes.

Morning September 26th 2018, patient Oeur.Ch got visited by his medical team with his pathology report result which was a benign tumor. The patient and his family couldn’t stop thanking the entire operative team and related staff for all they did for the family during a very difficult and emotional time. City International Hospital’s medical team with the quality of care all showed an amazing amount of compassion and it was recognized and appreciated by all of the family.
